Saints Pick Up First Win of Season, Cantrell No. 500 at North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia baseball team picked up its first win of the season, defeating the King College Tornado 11-9 at Bob Stein Stadium on Saturday. The win was also head coach Tom Cantrell's 500th win of his career at North Georgia and 677th of his career as a collegiate head baseball coach.

North Georgia (1-4) had the bats on their side early, plating five runs in the first inning. The scoring started when Brett Wright singled into center field, scoring Edwin Arias. Tremayne Toorie added to the scoring, plating Devin Gearhart.

Eason Spivey proceeded to double to left, bringing in Toorie and Gearhart. Spivey would then score on a Derek Hooper single just before the end of the inning.

After another perfect inning by Jacob Beauchamp on the mound, the Saints would plate Jesse Strickland and Jake McCurry on an Arias single to center field in the second.

The third inning saw another perfect inning from Beauchamp and another Saints run, this time by Wright scoring on a Hooper sacrifice fly to make the score 8-0.

Things got shaky in the fourth for North Georgia as King College (3-2) plated eight runs on four hits and three homeruns, including a grand slam.

North Georgia would respond in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs on two hits. The Saints scored John LaMay, Arias and Strickland to increase the lead to 11-8.

King College scored one more run but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit as the Saints cruised to the victory.

Arias led the Saints, going 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Jacob Beauchamp got a no-decision for the game, allowing Clint Spratlin to pick up his first win of the season. John LaMay also picked up his first save of the season. Alex Gonzalez (1-1) was credited with the loss for the Tornado.

The deciding game of the three-game set will be tomorrow, Feb. 10. First pitch is slated for noon. Live stats will not be available for the game, but Twitter updates will be available @SaintsSports throughout the game.
