Men’s Golf Finishes Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate Seventh, Women 13th
SEVIERVILLE, Ten. – The North Georgia College & State University men's and women's golf teams started their 2012-13 campaigns this week at the two-day Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate hosted by Carson-Newman. The men's squad finished the two-round tournament in seventh place while the women ended up 13th.
The men were led by Derek Watson who posted a 72 and 75 for a 147 which left him tied for 17th overall. Austin Booker finished just two strokes behind as he bounced back with a 71 in the second round after posting a 78 in the opening round. Booker's 149 left him tied for 26th.
Belmont Abbey College claimed both the team and indivdual crowns on the men's side as Adam Hedges paced the field with a 138 that included a 67 in Tuesday's round. Columbus State finished second as a team with Clayton State wrapping up the tournament in third on the men's side.
For the Saint women, Abbey Gill was the top finisher with a score of 168 that included a 78 in the second round. Gill finished in a tie for 50th along with teammate Casey Truelove.
Newberry College won the women's side of the tournament with the individual title being claimed by Columbus State's Kimesha Anthony who posted a 68 and a 76 for a 144.
The men will next compete in the USCA/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate at the Kiawah Island Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C. starting Monday, Sept. 17 while the women's squad will travel to Calera, Ala. to compete in the Montevallo/Full Moon BBQ Invitational at the Timberline Golf Club during the same period.
