Men’s Golf First, Women Third Through Opening Round of Chick-fil-A Spring Invitational
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia men's and women's golf teams opened their own 2013 Chick-fil-A Spring Invitational at Achasta Golf Club with strong performances and were able to just beat out the weather. The Saint men finished the first 18 holes first in the men's field while the Saint women ended the opening round in third.
On the men's side, North Georgia leads fellow Peach Belt Conference institution Young Harris College by four strokes with a combined team score of 307. Martin Methodist College is currently third of the six teams in the men's field with a 319.
Emmanuel College's Joel Sawyer and Shorter University's Patric Sundlof currently lead the field with a one-over par 73 while North Georgia's Will Brackett and Will McFarlin are currently tied for third with 74's.
The Saint men are led by Brackett's 74 with Grant Rish's 77 placing him in a tie for sixth. Aaron George and Hunter Beach are currently tied for 10th with matching 78's while Zach Caldwell ended the first day tied for 17th with an 80.
On the women's side, Shorter leads Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) – Atlanta by 20 strokes with a 328 while North Georgia sits third with a 350, just two strokes behind the Bees of SCAD – Atlanta. On the women's side, there are eight teams in the field.
Catalina Olarte led all players in the women's field with a 79 in the opening round, one stroke ahead of Shorter's Claudia Orrantia and two ahead of Orrantia's teammate Isabella Baldacci's 81.
Casey Truelove sits in a tie for 10th with a first-round 87 while Abbey Gill carded an 89, which has her tied for 13th, through the first 18 holes. Mariana Pelaez rounded out North Georgia's five in the opening round with matching 95's to sit in a tie for 24th.
The two fields will start the second and final round at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 19 in a shotgun format at Achasta.
