Angel's Golden Goal Takes Down Hurricanes in Double Overtime

DAHLONEGA, GA – Max Angel delivered again for the Saints, this time burying his free kick in double overtime to beat Georgia Southwestern 1-0 in Peach Belt action on Wednesday night.
North Georgia (7-6-1, 3-3 PBC) looked as though it was going to play to a scoreless draw with the Hurricanes, but Angel had other plans. After the Saints were a given a free kick just outside the box, the Saints rushed to get the kick off, and Angel didn't disappoint. The goal was Angel's fifth of the season and his third game-winner.
The game was back and forth throughout its entirety, with both teams finding ample opportunities. Neither was able to finish their chances however, as the first goal didn't come until about six minutes left in double overtime.
Georgia Southwestern (3-9-2, 0-5-1 PBC) was on the verge of earning their first conference win of the season, until the foul gave the Saints the win. GSW only attempted three shot in the first half, but found more chances in the second, finishing with seven.
Kristopher Alonzo picks up the victory for the Saints in shutout fashion. The sophomore made a couple of key saves for North Georgia, allowing for the dramatic win in double overtime. Alonzo finished with five saves.
The victory puts North Georgia at 9-1 all-time against Georgia Southwestern. With the Saints winning on Wednesday, it also assures them of a bid in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.
The defense was at the top of its game against the Hurricanes, not allowing many chances. Ben Tayi, Chris Bishop and Jesy Phelps helped assure the home win for the Saints. North Georgia is now 5-1 in Dahlonega, where they hope to keep the advantage on Saturday.
The contest served as North Georgia's Cancer Awareness game to raise money and awareness for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. All proceeds from the event will be donated to help find a cure for the deadly disease.
North Georgia welcomes in Lander this coming Saturday. The Saints will be looking to go back over the .500 mark in PBC play. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.
