Saints Claim 2-1 Victory Over Lees-McRae in Overtime

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The North Georgia College & State University men's soccer team overcame a late 1-0 deficit to bounce back and defeat the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College 2-1 in overtime at Tate Field Thursday afternoon.

The win improves the Saints' record to .500 (3-3) for the season while the Bobcats fall to 2-5.

The two squads entered halftime tied at 0-0 and it would take most of the second half for either team to find an advantage.

Lees-McRae, which held the early advantage in shots, was able to acquire the first goal of the game in the 82nd minute when James Galvani played the ball from the flank and into the bottom corner of the net. James Smith and Kevin Ruppert were credited with the assist on the play.

But the Saints bounced back in the closing minutes with four more shots in regulation and it was the final one that kept their hopes for a victory alive.

With just 17 seconds remaining in the second period, Chris Bishop knotted the score off a cross from Amin El-Shami to send the game into overtime.

It took just seven more minutes of action for North Georgia's Jamie Gleeson to find the game-winner as he headed the ball into the net off a cross feed by Juan Hurtado .

Lees-McRae held the advantage in shots early, but the Saints eventually out-shot the Bobcats 21-16 – 7-5 on goal. Gustavo Cunha led all attackers in the contest with six shots.

The Saints will have a full week to prepare for their next contest, a road-trip to Anderson, S.C. North Georgia will play another out of conference foe, this time taking on South Atlantic Conference foe Anderson University on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 4:00 p.m.
