Men’s Soccer Upsets No. 13 Flagler 3-1 on the Road

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The North Georgia College & State University men's soccer team earned one of the biggest victories in recent program history Saturday night as the men claimed a decisive 3-1 upset victory over 13th-ranked Flagler College with two late goals.

The win improves the North Georgia to 7-4-2 with a 3-2-2 Peach Belt Conference record while Flagler, which entered the contest second in the region and tied for first in the conference, moves to 8-3-3 and 6-2-1 in the league.

The loss drops Flagler behind both Lander University and the University of Montevallo in the conference standings as the Bearcats and Falcons were idle Saturday.

The visiting Saints of North Georgia never trailed in the contest as Daniel Bowlt scored his first goal of the season off a corner kick by Amin El-Shami in just the third minute of the game.

North Georgia held on to the 1-0 lead for 16 minutes before Erlend Lofsgaard his own goal, cleaning up a previously blocked shot to tie the score at one.

The game, which saw Flagler lead North Georgia 20-12 in shots, but just 9-7 in shots on goal, would proceed into the intermission with the score knotted at one-all.

Things appeared to be headed for overtime, but Gustavo Cunha found the game-winner in the 84th minute off a turnover by Flagler and sent a rocket into the net from 25 yards out.

As Flagler attempted to find an answer to avoid the upset, junior Tyler Daly broke away with the ball down the field and iced the score with just 52 seconds remaining as he scored his third goal of the season.

Kristopher Alonzo made eight saves in the game to record his seventh win of the year while Camp Bissell made four saves in his third loss of the year.

North Georgia has one final road contest of the regular season as the Saints will travel to Greenwood, S.C. on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The women's squads will get things started at 4:30 p.m. with the men to follow at around 7:00 p.m.
