Saints Open ITA Southeast Regionals in South Carolina

SUMTER, SC - The North Georgia men's tennis team began their fall season on Friday as they traveled to South Carolina to take part in the 2011 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships held at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

In the men's Single-A draw, sophomore Mateus Camasmie lost his opening round match to Alex Hayes of Lees-McRae in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, while Felipe Friedrich also fell to Queen University's Christain Lee-Daigle 6-3, 6-2.

Camasmie and Friedrich return to action Saturday morning in the consolation bracket. Camasmie faces Joan Valls of Cowley College, while Friedrich goes up against Peach Belt foe Jan Labas of Augusta State. 

Three of the five members of the Saints in the men's Single-B draw won their opening round matches in straight sets. Ernesto Farinas took down Flagler's Nicholas Scammacca 6-2, 6-2, Mario Mesquita defeated Erskine College's Vincent Chauvette 6-4, 6-4, and Mathew Guida won over conference rival Mario Cardenas of Georgia College 6-2, 6-1.

Farinas, Mesquita, and Guida were the lone members of the men's team to win their opening round singles match and they look to continue their winning ways in day two of the action. Farinas battles Abraham Lascari Diaz of Limestone College, Mesquita faces Daniel Lopez from Limestone as well, and Guida goes against Erskine's Coleman Welch.

Giovanni Santos was the only member of the Saints to receive an opening round bye and he now faces Samuel Mkrtychev of Flagler in the round of the 32 in men's Single-B action.

In his first collegiate match, Sam Gantt fell to Augusta State's Coulomb 6-3, 6-3 in Single-B action, while Brandon Sloan fell to Martin Harach of Young Harris in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.

Gantt received a first round bye in the consolation bracket and will advance to the second round where he will battle the winner of Skyler Engel of Flagler and Lander's Gary Bertoldo. Sloan also received an opening round bye in the consolation bracket and he is waiting on the results of several matches to see who he will be pitted against.

In doubles action, Camasmie and Friedrich fell to seventh seeded Jose Martinez and Gino Ramirez of Flagler 8-4 in the opening round of the Doubles-A bracket. In Doubles-B action, Mesquita/Guida and Sloan/Santos received first round byes, while Gantt and Farinas fell to Henric Falkenberg and Akio Mariano of Mount Olive. 

The ITA Regional Championships, sponsored by the USTA, date back to 1981 and for nearly two decades were also known as the Rolex Regional Championships. The ITA Regional Championships featured the top men's and women's players from each of the ITA's regions. All in all, 8,000 varsity tennis players from 600 schools participated in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
