Softball Remains #2 In Country, #1 in Region Poll
DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia
softball team remained the #2 team in the country for the third
straight week Wednesday afternoon, sitting only behind the
University of Alabama-Huntsville in the latest NFCA Division II Top
North Georgia remains the #2 team in the nation after taking last week off for final exams. Two weeks ago, the Saints went 6-0, taking down GCSU in a doubleheader to end the regular season, before traveling to South Carolina and sweeping their way through the Peach Belt Conference Tournament to claim the 2009 Championship.
North Georgia currently sits at 43-3 and holds the nation’s best winning percentage at .935. The Saints ended the regular season at 17-1 in the Peach Belt Conference to capture the regular season championship, the program’s first in school history.
The NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, two representing each of the eight NCAA regions. Records shown are through games of April 25, 2009. First-place votes are in parentheses.
The Saints claim the top spot in the latest NCAA Southeast Region Poll, a ranking North Georgia has claimed in each of the six regional polls this season. With the Saints at the top of the Region with a 39-2 in-region record, USC Aiken continues to claim the second spot, while Lenoir-Rhyne and Augusta State follow in the third and fourth positions.
Wingate University falls to number five, while GCSU is 6th, Francis Marion is 7th, Catawba is 8th, Mount Olive 9th, and Newberry rounds out the top 10.
While North Georgia claimed the first Automatic bid in the Southeast Region with the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship, Queens University followed and captured the Conference Carolina’s Conference Tournament for the second automatic bid. Carson-Newman securing their second straight bid to the NCAA Tournament, winning the South Atlantic Conference Tournament last weekend with four straight victories.
The Saints will now await word on seeding and location for the 2009 NCAA Softball Tournament as North Georgia makes their second straight tournament appearance. The NCAA is set to announce the field and hosting sites on Sunday, May 3, 2009.
