Softball Off To Best Start in School History at 11-0

Box Score

DECATUR, AL – The North Georgia softball team used another pitchers dual to cap a perfect 7-0 record over the weekend at the UAH Charger Chillout, taking down North Alabama 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

With the victory, North Georgia is now off to their best start in school history, posting the program’s first-ever 11-0 mark to start a season, and doing it in all ways with blowout wins, extra-inning thrillers, and even taking down a pair of ranked teams along the way.

North Alabama was on a mission to take out their second ranked team in as many days after blanking #20 Wayne State 1-0 on Saturday, but the Saints avoided the upset bid and broke the Lyons five-game winning streak, sending UNA to 6-5 on the season.

The Saints jumped on top early as they have done in so many games this season, using a leadoff single from Laura Voyles who stole second and later came around to score on a throw as Lauren Dykes was trying to advance to second.

North Georgia added another run in the fourth inning as Katherin Martin doubled to left field, bringing Pilar Harden around to score and make it 2-0. The Saints tallied one more single run in the sixth, this time coming on a passed ball as Harden raced home, her second run scored of the contest.

North Alabama picked up their lone run in the last of the sixth as Palmer flied out to center for a sacrifice fly, allowing a run to score from third and make it 3-1.

Dykes (2-0) picked up the win for the Saints, allowing just one hit and one earned run while striking out five in 5.1 innings of work. Phillips came on for her second save of the season, tossing 1.2 innings out of the pen and allowing a hit while striking out one.

The Saints will finally play their home opener of the 2010 season on Sunday, February 28, hosting Queens University for a doubleheader set to start at 1:00 p.m. The Royals return to Dahlonega after making in appearance in last year’s Dahlonega Regional where North Georgia defeated Queens 2-0 in the opening round.
