Lady Saints Soar Past Falcons for 5th Straight Win
DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia women's basketball team continued their winning ways on Friday evening, using a big second half to roll past the Falcons of St. Augustine's College 72-57 on the opening day of the 2010 Chick-fil-A Thanksgiving Classic in Memorial Hall.
The Lady Saints pick up their fifth straight victory, improving to 6-1 on the year, while the Falcons drop their first game of the season, falling to 4-1 on the 2010 campaign.
The Falcons scored the game's first bucket at the 18:18 mark to draw first blood, but North Georgia came right back and Jessica Trice drilled a three-pointer to give the Lady Saints a short-lived lead at 3-2.
St. Augustine regained the lead on the next possession and held the edge for most of the first half, leading by as many as six points on two different occasions before North Georgia rallied back and knotted the score at 18-18 on a three-pointer from Meredith Montgomery with 7:58 remaining in the period.
The Lady Saints finally pulled in front again at the 6:25 mark of the opening half when Lindsey Moss lined up from long range and drained the three-pointer, giving North Georgia a 23-20 lead and their first advantage since the opening minutes.
North Georgia led by as many as five points in the final minutes of the half, but both teams came alive over the final 60 seconds, scoring a combined 12 points in the final minute as Sarah Stinson tallied a layup at the buzzer to give the Lady Saints a three-point lead at 34-31 heading to intermission.
The Lady Saints came out in the second half and never trailed, pushing the lead to double digits at the 10:05 mark as Janyce Ealey knocked down a pair of free throws to give North Georgia an 11-point lead at 53-42.
The Falcons were never able to cut the lead to single digits again as North Georgia led by as many as 16 points on three different occasions down the stretch before settling for the 15-point victory.
Ealey led all scorers with 24 points, posting 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Montgomery was the only other North Georgia player in double figures, finishing with 16 points, including a 9-for-10 stint from the free throw line. Tiffany Marlow was a point shy of double figures, while Trice and Moss tallied eight points apiece.
Keyona Bryant led the Falcons with 15 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, and Brittany Torain had 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting, while adding five steals.
The Lady Saints return to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Trevecca Nazarene in the final game of the 2010 Chick-fil-A Classic. Tip-off against the Trojans is set for 3:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
