DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia women's basketball team opened the season in style on Friday evening in the second game of the X-Trem Tip-Off Classic, as they ran away early and knocked off Trevecca Nazarene 83-60 in Memorial Hall.
The Trojans (1-4) drop their fourth straight game, while the Lady Saints (1-0) open their 2011-12 campaign with a victory at home.
The Lady Saints could do little wrong in the opening minutes of the game, scoring the game's first 16 points, capped by a jumper from Jaymee Carnes with 15:08 remaining in the first half.
The North Georgia defense held the Trojans scoreless for nearly the first six minutes of the game, but Trevecca finally got on the board at the 14:10 mark when Anissa Ragland hit a layup to cut the Lady Saints' lead to 14.
The Trojans continued to show signs of life over the next three minutes, connecting on three straight three-pointers, but the North Georgia offense kept pace and held on to a 23-11 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Lady Saints led by as many as 21 points in the first half on a layup from Stephanie Huffman with 51 seconds remaining, but Trevecca's Lauren Wasson drilled a three-pointer with 15 seconds on the clock to cut North Georgia's lead to 18 at 48-30 heading to intermission.
The long ball was the only savior for the Trojans in the first half, going 7-for-12 from behind the arc, while for North Georgia points in the paint were the difference, scoring 24 of their 48 first-half points in the lane.
The second half was much of the same, as North Georgia led by double digits the entire second half and cruised to victory. The Trojans pulled to within 12 points on a three-pointer by Rachel Bollinger with 6:34 remaining, but the Lady Saints responded with an 11-0 run with 10 of those coming from Carnes to put the game away.
Carnes was as good as advertised in her debut for the Lady Saints, scoring 28 points and adding 12 rebounds for a double-double, while Giovanni Sims added 20 points and 15 rebounds in her first collegiate appearance.
Wasson led the Trojans with 17 points, while Haley Felker added 16 points in 35 minutes off the bench.
In the opening game of the X-Trem Tip-Off Classic, North Alabama overcame an early deficit and rallied to take down Georgia College 57-54.
The Lady Saints return to action on Saturday afternoon in the final game of the X-Trem PrintGraphics Tip-Off Classic, taking on North Alabama at 4:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
