Women’s Basketball Tabbed Sixth in Preseason Coaches Poll

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The North Georgia College & State University women's basketball team has been tabbed sixth in the Peach Belt Conference Preseason Coaches Poll as released by the conference office Wednesday.

For the first time in league history there is a tie atop the preseason standings as No. 10 Clayton State University and the fifth-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken are tied with 150 points. The Pacers received seven first-place votes and four second-place votes to go along with a lone third-place vote while the Lakers claimed the remaining six first-place votes and six second-place votes.

The Saints received a third-place vote along with two fourth-place votes, five fifth-place votes and one vote for seventh, eighth and ninth after finishing last season 12-14 overall. The 2011-12 Saints just missed out on post-season play as they went 1-4 over the final five games of the season.

Columbus State University was chosen third in the preseason poll with No. 20 Lander University and the University of North Carolina Pembroke rounding out the top-five. North Georgia, Georgia Southwestern University, Young Harris College, Augusta State University and Armstrong Atlantic State University were all chosen in the top-10 heading into the season with the University of Montevallo, Georgia College, Francis Marion University and Flagler College rounding out the 14-team preseason poll.

This season, head coach Buffie Burson returns five players including one senior and two juniors. While the rest of the team, both returners and newcomers, is young, this year's team is also extremely talented and will look to play hard day-in and day-out.

The Saints also have their not-so-secret weapon in junior Jaymee Carnes – the 2012 Daktronics National Player of the Year as well as Southeast Region and PBC Player of the Year.

North Georgia will open its 2012-13 season on Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17 in its own Lady Saints Tip-Off Classic against Carson-Newman and the University of West Florida. Following the two home games, North Georgia will hit the road for seven games to close out 2012.

The 2012-13 preseason coaches poll is below.Teams were given 13 points for a first-place vote, 12 for a second and so on. Coaches were not permitted to rank their own team.
