Lady Saints Surge on Final Day, Finish 5th in St. Simons

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA – The North Georgia women's golf opened their spring competitive season this week firing a two round aggregate score of 699 (364-335) to finish fifth at the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational, contested at the par-72 King & Prince Golf Club.
The Lady Saints shaved an impressive 29 strokes off their opening round total to jump from sixth to fifth place in the final round as they raced past a reeling SCAD Atlanta squad.
Shorter improved on their opening round 343 by 20 shots in the final round jumping from fifth to first as they cruised to a five stroke victory over Coastal Georgia. Montevallo finished in third, while SCAD Savannah and North Georgia rounded out the top five.
The Lady Saints improved on their eighth place a year ago at the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational shaving 66 strokes off their team total.
Nikki Stewart of SCAD Savannah followed an opening round 79 with a 77 jumping from third to first to earn individual honors. Coastal Georgia's Christain Liggin finished two strokes off the pace in second, while four players tied for third place six shots off Stewart's pace.
Catalina Olarte picked up right where she left off in the fall as she was the two-round low scorer once again for the Lady Saints. Olarte along with her four other teammates each improved on their opening round scores. She followed and opening round 83 with an eight-over-par 80 to finish in a tie for seventh with Montevallo's Ashlee Beck.
Following Olarte was Casey Truelove who shaved 10 strokes off her opening round 93 in round two to finish in a tie for 21st place.
Abbey Gill and Erica Breeden finished behind Truelove in a tie for 30th place. Gill cut eight strokes off her opening round 96 in round two, while Breeden shaved four strokes off her opening round 92.
LeeAnn Noble tied Truelove for the biggest turn around in day two as she also shaved 10 stokes off her first round score, following a 103 with a 93 to finish in a tie for 43rd.
The lady Saints return to action in two weeks when they travel to Columbus, Georgia to take part in the CSU Lady Cougar Collegiate February 27-28.
