Women’s Soccer Vaults up to School-Record Fifth-Nationally

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The North Georgia College & State University women's soccer team has ascended to new heights this season as the Saints find themselves fifth-nationally as ranked by the National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA)/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Women's National Poll revealed Tuesday afternoon.

The ranking of fifth sets a new program record in the NCAA Division II era for North Georgia. The 2011 Saints were ranked as high as 10th-nationally which was the previous high.

The Saints (7-0, 1-0 PBC) took advantage of the misfortune of several other teams in last week's top-10 including Peach Belt Conference rival No. 4 Columbus State University falling to then No. 24 Armstrong Atlantic State University 1-0. Columbus State fell to 18th-nationally this week while the Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic moved up to 15th.

For the first time this season there is a new No. 1 atop the polls as Grand Valley State moved up from third to first. Sonoma State also moved up, going from sixth to second while former No. 1 Saint Rose fell from their perch atop the standings to third this week.

North Georgia is also now ranked No. 1 in the Southeast Region ahead of Armstrong Atlantic, Columbus State, Lenoir-Rhyne and Flagler College.

The Saints continued to roll through the early portion of their season last week as they earned two victories – one on the road and one at home. North Georgia's women first earned an 8-2 victory over Carson-Newman College on Wednesday, Sept. 12 before opening their PBC slate with a 4-0 victory over conference-newcomer Young Harris College Saturday, Sept. 15.

Sophomore defender Megan Morrow was named the PBC Defender-of-the-Week on Monday, Sept. 17 as she scored the game-winning goal and recorded two assists in Saturday's league opener while also leading the North Georgia defense to its fifth shutout victory of the season. With the help of Morrow, North Georgia is now second in the conference in goals allowed average (0.43).

The Saints have just one game this week, a PBC home match with Georgia College on Saturday, Sept. 22. Kickoff is schedule for 1:00 p.m.
