Georgia College Upsets Fifth-Ranked Saints 3-2
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The fifth-ranked North Georgia College & State University women's soccer team fell behind early to Georgia College and, despite a fierce attack, never fully recoverd as Ashley Veilleux recorded a hat trick to lead the Bobcats to the 3-2 upset at the North Georgia Soccer Field Saturday afternoon.
The loss is the first of the season for the nationally-ranked Saints and moves them to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in Peach Belt Conference play while the Bobcats improve to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Veilleux recorded two of her goals in the first half to give Georgia College a 2-0 lead heading into intermission. But it was the Saints that held a 15-5 advantage in shots that saw the ball in Georgia College territory for most of the half.
The Saints came out of halftime fired up and it showed on the pitch as sophomore Cicely Taliaferro scored an unassisted goal just 43 seconds into the second stanza, cleaning up a North Georgia attack that saw three shots taken in the span of mere seconds.
Senior Abby Trevino then found the equalizing score in the 52nd minute as Annie Stephens lost control of the ball in the box, allowing Trevino to easily score.
The Saints once again were able to control the ball and keep it on the Bobcats' side of the field, but Olivia Holden found a hole and fed the ball to Veilleux to give her the hat trick in the 75th minute. The score proved to be all Georgia College needed to pull off the upset despite several late attempts by North Georgia.
North Georgia's attack was remained in the game as it has all season. The Saints out-shot the Bobcats 32-14 but Stephens had one of the best performances on the pitch as she recorded 16 saves including several diving stops.
The fifth-ranked Saints also held the advantage in corner kicks 7-1.
North Georgia will play one more home game to cap off their three-game homestand. The Saints will welcome out of conference foe Pfeiffer University to the North Georgia Soccer Field on Wednesday, Sept. 26 for a 4:00 p.m. match.
