No. 19 Saints Hang on Late, Top Flagler 10-9
ST. AUGUSTINE, FL
– The North Georgia offense staked themselves to a 10-run
lead on Saturday evening before Flagler College rallied with nine
straight runs to put a scare in the Saints who held on for the 10-9
victory in game two a three-game weekend series at Flagler Stadium
in non-conference action.
North Georgia improves to 33-15 on the season, while Flagler drops
back-to-back games for the first time since the middle of April,
falling to 27-22 on the year.
North Georgia had scored 10 runs on 10 hits through the first five
innings, but could only muster four hit in the last four innings to
hold on for the win.
Flagler made a significant dent in North Georgia’s lead in
the bottom of the sixth inning, sending eleven me to the plate and
scoring seven runs on eight base knocks.
The home Saints, made it interesting in the ninth, pulling to
within a run off a two-run single up the middle by Payne Maddox,
but Justin Yackee came in out of the pen to slam the door, forcing
a double play and a strikeout to end the rally and give North
Georgia their second one-run victory in as many days over
Flagler.
North Georgia scored early and often to earn their 10-run lead
after just five innings, scoring a run in the first, four in the
second, two in the third, and three more in the fifth before
Flagler’s relief pitching tossed up zeros on the board the
rest of the way.
Anders Oster had the big day at the plate for the Saints, tallying
a pair of hits and driving in three runs, while four other players
finished with a pair of base knocks as part of a 14-hit
performance.
Craig Brisson scored a trio of runs from the leadoff spot with
three walks, but the senior reached a milestone with a leadoff
single in the seventh inning, recording his 324th collegiate hit, a
mark that ties him for the all-time record in North Georgia history
with former great Brian Lauderdale who garnered PBC and South
Atlantic Region Player of the Year honors in 2006.
Blake Hobby (6-4) tossed 5.1 innings, scattering 11 hits and
allowing six earned runs, while walking one and striking out a
pair. Head coach Tom Cantrell sifted through four pitchers in the
game as Yackee was on the mound for the final out and his first
save of the year.
North Georgia will look to pick up their first three-game series
sweep in 43 days, a mark dating back to a trio of wins over
Montevallo on the 19th and 20th of March. First pitch on Sunday
afternoon against Flagler is set for 1:00 p.m. as the two clubs
will get one more look at each other before squaring off again in
the first round of the PBC Tournament next weekend.
