Braves' Bats Too Much For Saints In Nightcap Win
DAHLONEGA, GA
– The North Georgia baseball team could not muster an
momentum off a series opening win over the No. 21 UNC Pembroke on
Saturday afternoon, falling in game two of a doubleheader 9-2 at
Bob Stein Stadium in Peach Belt Conference action.
The Saints drop their first game in over a week, falling to 8-5
overall and 1-1 in the Peach Belt Conference, while #21 UNC
Pembroke improve to 10-2 on the season and 1-1 in league
action.
North Georgia managed just seven hits and a pair of runs in the
game, striking out 10 times, including four times in the 7th and
8th innings with the bases loaded to singe a pair of rallies.
UNC Pembroke scored a single run in the first, before plating five
in the third, and three more in the ninth for the seven-run
victory. The Saints were unable to score until the sixth where they
pushed one run across before adding one more in the eighth.
Seth Kivett and Derek Funk each tallied a pair of runs batted in,
while Jordan Pegram added two hits for the Braves. North Georgia
left plenty to be desired at the plate, stranding 11 runners and
fanning 10 times.
Chad Sage was the bright spot again for the Saints offensively,
recording a pair of hits in four trips to the plate, giving the
junior five hits on the day with six runs batted in and two home
runs.
Justin Yow (3-0) picked up the win for the Braves, tossing 6.1
innings and allowing five hits, one run, while striking out four
and walking four. Blake Hobby (2-1) Suffered the loss for the
Saints as the sophomore lasted just 2.1 innings. He gave up four
hits, four runs, all earned, while striking out one.
Four other North Georgia pitchers came to the mound with Alex
Simmons getting the job done in 4.2 innings of work. Simmons
allowed three hits, no runs, and recorded two strikeouts in his
appearance out of the pen.
North Georgia and UNC Pembroke return to action on Sunday
afternoon for the rubber game of the three-game set. First pitch is
set for 1:00 p.m. at Bob Stein Stadium.
