North Georgia Recognizes 34 Seniors at Senior Banquet

DAHLONEGA, GA – The University of North Georgia Department of Athletics held its seventh-annual senior banquet last Tuesday evening in Memorial Hall, recognizing 34 seniors who are completing their collegiate careers during the 2012-13 season.

Women's soccer player Taylor Lee and baseball player Kenny Bellavance were named the Female and Male Scholar Athletes of the Year. Lee, who will graduate from North Georgia with a degree in Special Education, boasts a 3.82 grade point average while Bellavance, a Business Finance major, will graduate with a 3.97 GPA.

During her three-year career as a Saint, Lee was twice named to the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) All-Academic Team and was also a two-time PBC Gold Level Scholar. This past season, she was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Southeast Region Team and was named to the District 3 All-Academic team as well as the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Bellavance, wrapping up his fourth season with the baseball program, is a member of the Beta Alpha Psi Accounting and Finance Honor Society as well as the Beta Gamma Sigma Honors Society and is a member of North Georgia's Mike Cottrell College of Business Honors Program. He is a two-time PBC All-Academic Team selection and is also a two-time PBC Gold Level Scholar Athlete.

Softball player Katherine Martin, a four-year starter for the program at first base, was named North Georgia's 2012-13 Female Athlete of the Year. In her four years, Martin boasts a career batting average of .317 with 200 hits, 43 doubles, 22 home runs and 17 stolen bases in 215 games, second all-time in program history. She has batted in 124 runs while scoring 128 herself. On defense, Martin has secured a program-best 1,364 putouts while leading the team to two PBC regular-season and tournament titles, two Southeast Region crowns and two trips to the College World Series in both 2010 and 2011. In 2010, she was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's (NFCA) All-Southeast Region First Team as well as the NFCA All-America Third Team and earned PBC All-Tournament honors in 2011. Prior to this season, Martin was named a PBC Preseason All-Conference selection.

The Male Athlete of the Year was awarded to Bellavance, UNG's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). A four-year starter, Bellavance made his mark on the baseball program as being one of the most balanced student-athletes to put on the Saints jersey. Along with his numerous academic awards listed above, Bellavance also boasts a .326 career batting average in 176 starts off 234 hits that includes 25 doubles, five triples, two home runs, 117 runs batted in and 117 runs scored. His 19 career sacrifice hits has him tied for fifth all-time in school history. In 2010, he was named to the Daktronics All-Region team and backed that up by earning All-Region honors from both Daktronics and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) in 2011. He is also a two-time All-PBC selection and was named to the PBC's Preseason All-Conference Team prior to the 2012 season.

The North Georgia Department of Athletics would like to thank the 34 seniors for their dedication to the university and for representing North Georgia as the final class to graduate as Saints.
