NEWBERRY, SC – North Georgia cruised out
to a 20-point halftime lead before running away from Newberry
College with an 82-63 victory Saturday evening at the Eleazer Arena
in non-conference action.
The Saints improve to 4-0 on the season in their final tune-up before jumping into Peacb Belt Conference action Monday evening in a clash of unbeaten teams as North Georgia travels to Francis Marion University to take on the 6-0 Patriots.
North Georgia found themselves with a nine point lead midway through the first half, but a 16-1 run down the stretch put the Saints up by 24 points with just 4:33 remaining in the half. Senior LaBrian Lyons put a lid on the first period with a fastbreak dunk with 37 seconds remaining to give North Georgia a 45-25 lead at the break.
The second half saw the Saints pick up right where they left off in the early going, using a three-pointer from Andre Morgan, and a three-point play the old fashioned way by Myron Talbert to give North Georgia what would be their largest lead of the game at 51-25 with 19:10 remaining in the contest.
Newberry (6-2) was able to get back into the game as Brett Goodwell sent a running layup home with 5:37 remaining in the contest to cut the Saints’ lead to just 12 points at 71-59. North Georgia answered right back however, with seven straight points to push the lead right back to 19, a lead that would be the final margin in the Saints 82-63 road victory.
Michael Moynihan led the way for the Saints with 20 points on 7-7 shooting from the free throw line, while Lyons tallied 17 points of his own while grabbing five rebounds. Morgan chipped in 14 points and five steals, and Talbert reached double figures with 11 points.
Goodwell led Newberry with 27 points and six rebounds, while Grant Domsic added 12 points in 38 minutes of action.
The Saints will travel from Newberry College to Florence, South Carolina, where the Patriots will be waiting Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. as both teams open PBC play.
