Men's Golf in 13th Place at Lander Bearcat Invitational
GREENWOOD, SC – The North Georgia men's golf team completed the opening round of the Second Annual Bearcat Golf Classic on Monday afternoon and currently sit in 13th place in the field of 17 teams at the Greenwood Country Club.
The Saints, who were away from tournament play for 24 straight days, returned to action with an 11-over-par 299 and are currently tied for 13th place overall. Georgia Southwestern leads the classic after the opening round, sitting at 7-under-par (281), while Barton College and host Lander are tied for second, but trail the Hurricanes by six strokes.
Tied with North Georgia in 13th place is USC Aiken, while Coker College (300) is 15th, Montevallo (304) is 16th, and Clayton State University (311) rounds out the field.
Georgia Southwestern's Craig Gibson is atop the leaderboard heading into Tuesday's final round, firing a 5-under-par 67 to clear Barton's Michael Marshburn and Lander's Wes Bowman by a single stroke.
North Georgia's 299 team total was led by Brian Mallory who fired a 34 on the back nine to finish with a 1-under-par 71 for the day and in a tie for 13th place overall.
Bryson Womack was 1-over-par for the day to finish with a 73, while Howard Duffin put together a 5-over-par 77 in the opening round. Grant Rish and Matt Rochlin rounded out the team at 78 and 79 respectively to send the Saints to the final round 18 shots off the pace.
The field was scheduled to play 36 holes on the opening day, but inclement weather forced the event to just 18 holes on Monday, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday for the final round. Click HERE to view Tuesday's tee sheet as the Saints tune up for the Peach Belt Conference Championship in two weeks.
