North Georgia Upended by Francis Marion
EVANS, GA – North Georgia saw their season
come to an end Friday evening, falling to top-seeded Francis Marion
University 2-0 in the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference
Tournament at Blanchard Woods Park.
The win gives FMU their eighth in a row and extends their unbeaten
streak to 13 matches, while North Georgia falls to 8-11-1 on the
season and come up short from their first-ever finals
appearance.
The Patriots did not waste time getting on the scoreboard as Juan
Rivas flicked a shot past NGCSU keeper Rade Tanaskovic just 1:19
into the game.
FMU struck again later in the first half as Clinton took it upon
himself to finish off a play, cleaning up a loose ball following a
deflection and blasting it in from 20 yards out for his eighth
score of the year.
Back on their heels, the Saints charged forward and had good
scoring opportunities in the first half, but could not find the
net. North Georgia outshot FMU 5-4 in the first 45 minutes.
The second half was a defensive struggle. The Saints replaced
Tanaskovic in goal with Stephen Smith, who kept FMU from scoring
again despite facing a barrage of shots. The Patriots took 13 shots
in the second half alone, but only two of those were on goal.
North Georgia did not get a second-half surge the way they managed
in the first half, taking six shots in the final 45 minutes.
The Saints end their season the way they did a year ago, falling in
the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.
