Flagler Holds on Late, Take Down Saints 2-1
DAHLONEGA, GA
– The North Georgia men’s soccer team nearly fought
their way out of two-goal deficit Saturday afternoon, but Flagler
College held on to defeat the Saints 2-1 at the muddy Soccer
Complex in Peach Belt Conference action.
The Saints fall to 5-9 overall with the loss and 1-6 in the Peach
Belt Conference, while Flagler College improves to 10-5-1 on the
season and 5-1 in the league.
In what appeared to be a game headed to a scoreless halftime,
Flagler rallied their troops and Killeen Conor scored the
game’s first goal at the 44:19 mark, taking a pass from Greg
Taafe and giving Flagler a 1-0 lead at intermission.
In the second half, Flagler would take a two-goal lead in the 62nd
minute as Pol Berenguer scored his fifth goal of the season off a
pass from Mack Hough, giving the visiting Saints all the offense
they would need.
North Georgia would rally and make a game of it however, scoring
in the 72nd minute as Ben Tayi sent a pass up the sideline that
found Jeff Majors in stride. Majors slithered through the Flagler
defense and sent a shot past Matt Gilman to pull North Georgia to
within a goal at 2-1.
North Georgia had plenty of chances to tie the game down the
stretch, but never managed the equalizer as Flagler held on for the
one-goal victory. The physical conference matchup featured five
yellow cards, while each team was also handed a red card.
Rade Tanaskovic suffered the loss for North Georgia, allowing both
FC goals, while recording five saves in all 90 minutes of action.
Gilman picked up the victory for Flagler, stopping five shots of
his own, while allowing one goal.
North Georgia out-shot Flagler 13-11, and held a 4-2 advantage in
corner kicks, while the two teams combined for 30 total fouls.
North Georgia will play their final regular season game Saturday
October 31, hosting UNC Pembroke at the Soccer Complex in Peach
Belt Conference action.
