Lees-McRae Races Past Men's Soccer Team 3-0
DAHLONEGA, Georgia – (UNGAthletics.com) – The Lees-McRae College men's soccer team leveled its overall record to 3-3 with a 3-0 non-conference victory over the University of North Georgia on Wednesday at the UNG Soccer Complex. Despite the wet and soggy conditions, the Bobcats used three first half goals including a pair of quick ones sandwiched around the game's 11:00 mark to secure the victory.
L-MC's Matthew Cureton opened the scoring when he finished a cross from teammate Jordan Wright at the 10:16 mark. Less than a minute later it was Wright on the scoring end as the freshman forward scored on a free kick from eight yards outside the box.
Yago Xavier capped the scoring in the 31st minute when he scored on a penalty kick following a UNG foul in the box.
Lees-McRae outshot the Nighthawks 15-9 and held a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Kris Alonzo turned away a penalty kick attempt from L-MC's Xavier just over a minute into the game and ended the contest with seven saves against 10 shots on target. His counterpart Thomas Rusling earned the victory after stopping the lone shots the Nighthawks put on goal.
UNG (1-7, 0-1 PBC) returns to action on October 2 when the Nighthawks entertain Anderson (S.C.) University at 7:00 PM in Dahlonega.
