Men's Tennis Completes Fall Season at ITA Regionals
SUMTER, SC – The North Georgia men's tennis
team debuted last weekend, traveling to the South Carolina for the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeastern Regional.
While inclement weather was the story of the weekend, North Georgia
put together some impressive runs in singles and doubles.
In the Men's Singles A-Draw, Felipe Friedrich had an
impressive showing, taking down Wingate's Braeden Patchell in
the opening round, before putting nationally ranked GCSU's
Jerome Leborgne on the ropes in the round of 32. The sophomore was
serving to win the match before falling 6-0, 6-7, 7-5 to the league
rival.
Mateus Camasmie ran through the Men's Singles B-Draw, taking
down Catawba's Tycho Lambergitis in straight sets to open the
weekend, before getting past Wingate's Fernando Montemurro
and Mount Olive's Diogo Sender, also in straight sets, to
advance to the quarterfinal round. In the quarters, Camasmie went
up against Mount Olive's Thiago Dualiby and dropped the first
set 4-6, before rallying back and taking the final two sets 6-2 and
6-0 to advance to the championship round where he withdrew due to
travel arrangements.
Adrien Saulais received an opening round bye, but edged
Flagler's Ureild Oquendo in the second round, and topped
Renato Mendes from Barton College who retired due to injury in the
second set. Saulais then went up against GCSU's Tyler Franks
and fell 6-2, 6-4.
Giovani Santos opened the weekend with a three-set victory over
Lander's Ross Armstrong, but fell in the second round to
Francis Marion's Ryan Siney 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.
Ernesto Farinias fell to Augusta State's Jenner Stevenson in
straight sets, before coming back in the consolation bracket
advancing to the quarterfinal round, including a 6-1, 7-6 victory
over Francis Marion's Mickey Poirier.
Brandon Sloan suffered a loss to Pfeiffer's Ben Hunter in his
opening match, and after dropping to the consolation bracket, went
up against Lander's Armstrong and fell 6-2, 6-2 to the Peach
Belt Conference foe.
David Konigsberg and Jake Richardson both dropped first-round
matches, but Konigsberg advanced to the second round of the
consolation draw following a withdraw from Augusta State's
Sergi Forcadel.
In doubles action, Camasmie and Santos teamed up to win four
straight matches, including a 9-8 victory over Francis
Marion's Mickey Poirier and Tanguy Montoisy to advance to the
championship where the duo withdrew due to travel arrangements.
The ITA Regional Championships, sponsored by the USTA, date back to
1981 and for nearly two decades were also known as the Rolex
Regional Championships. The ITA Regional Championships featured the
top men's and women's players from each of the ITA's regions. All
in all, 8,000 varsity tennis players from 600 schools participated
in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
