Upset-Minded Saints Fall Short at No. 26 USC Aiken

AIKEN, SC – The North Georgia men's tennis team nearly pulled off an upset on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-4 at 26th-ranked USC Aiken in Peach Belt Conference action.

The Saints fall to 6-5 overall and 0-4 in the Peach Belt Conference, while the Pacers, ranked No. 26 in the country and No. 10 in the Southeast Region, improve to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in league action.

North Georgia got off to a hot start as Felipe Friedrich and Mateus Camasmie combined to take down the 14th-ranked tandem of Gregory Andrade and Bruno Orlandini 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

The Saints would fall in the remaining two doubles matches, but responded in singles play as Friedrich toppled 38th-ranked Andrade 6-4, 2-0, before the No. 1 Pacer retired to give North Georgia their second point of the day.

Camasmie followed at the No. 2 position with a 6-0, 7-6 victory over Ben Klaas, while Giovani Santos was also a winner at No. 3 singles, defeating Orlandini 6-4, 6-0.

The Saints had chances to pull out one of the three remaining decisive matches, but USC Aiken rallied in all three, including a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory by Lucas Gobbi over Adrien Saulais to give the Pacers a 5-4 victory.

The Saints return to action on Sunday morning, traveling to Augusta State for a 10:00 a.m. meeting with the Jaguars in another Peach Belt Conference contest.
