Saints softball headed to first-ever NCAA Regional

North Georgia to leave town Monday at 3:00 p.m. for UNC Pembroke

DAHLONEGA, GA - The North Georgia softball team received news early Sunday morning out of the NCAA office in Indianapolis, Indiana, of an at-large bid to the 2008 NCAA Division II Softball Championships to be hosted by UNC Pembroke. This is the schools first-ever appearance in a regional tournament for any sport since entering the NCAA.

The Saints made the field of 64 teams after a season that saw them finish fourth in the Peach Belt Conference during the regular season and make an unforgettable run to the championship game in their first-ever appearance in the PBC tournament. North Georgia heads into the tournament as the #6 seed with a record of 35-13 and will oppose the #3 seed in Lenoir Rhyne as they enter their third straight regional tournament with a record of 39-12.

North Georgia will leave campus Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. and travel to North Carolina where they will practice on Tuesday in preparation for their opening round game Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

Eight teams will compete at eight host sites around the country in a double elimination tournament, with the winner of each regional advancing to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship in Houston, Texas, May 14-17, as part of the NCAA Division II Sports Festival. The finals will be hosted by Rice University and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority.

Thursday's softball action at LRA Field will get underway at 11 a.m. with the first of two elimination games, with winner's bracket play resuming at 4 p.m. Softball action begins at 11 a.m. on Friday as well, with Saturday's action slated to start at 1 p.m. The South Atlantic Regional championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m., with an if necessary contest slated for Sunday at noon.
