Cancer Awareness Day Huge Success Once Again
DAHLONEGA, GA
– The North Georgia softball team hosted its fifth annual
Cancer Awareness Day on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, taking on Columbus
State University as a capacity crowd was on hand for a doubleheader
between the in-state rivals.
The annual event at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium raised
$905.07, which was donated to the Susan G. Komen For the Cure
Foundation. The softball program would like to thank Columbus State
for taking part in the event, and Campus Connection, the University
Bookstore, for supporting the doubleheader.
Between games, North Georgia and Columbus State recognized cancer
survivors and honored those who have passed from the deadly
disease. Brent McGuire threw out the first pitch to his daughter,
right fielder Courtney McGuire, in honor of his father who passed
away in December.
The Saints used 7-0 and 7-4 victories to sweep the Cougars and
clinch the program’s second straight Peach Belt Conference
regular season championship on Cancer Awareness Day.
The Saints posted a 51-game winning streak before falling in the
second round of the NCAA Division II College World Series, second
longest streak in NCAA softball history at any level. North Georgia
captured back-to-back Peach Belt Conference tournament titles in
2010, and advanced to the NCAA National Championships for the
second time in as many years.
