DAHLONEGA, GA
– The 2nd-ranked North Georgia softball team is set to host
the program’s annual Captain D’s Classic over the
weekend at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium, welcoming three teams
to town for eight games over a two-day period.
Play will start on Friday, February 12, at 12:00 p.m., one of four
games on Friday, before four more games on Saturday are slated to
start at 10:00 a.m. Delta State, Northern Kentucky, and Valdosta
State will all travel to Dahlonega and each compete in four
games.
The #2 Saints will take on Northern Kentucky and Delta State once,
while opposing 6th-ranked Valdosta State twice, matching up against
the Blazers with a game each day. Last season, North Georgia
traveled to Valdosta State the first week of the season and swept
the Blazers in a hotly contested doubleheader that turned out to be
a pair of one-run games. North Georgia has opened the season 4-0
and will look to stay hot over the weekend in four home games.
Valdosta State enters the weekend as the #6 team in country after
advancing to the South Super Regional last season and falling to
national finalists and #1 ranked Alabama-Huntsville. The Blazers
are 2-0 to start the season after a convincing two-game road sweep
of Flagler College.
Northern Kentucky has high expectations for the 2010 season after
surprising the field and capturing the 2009Great Lakes Valley
Conference Tournament Championship and advancing to the NCAA
Tournament for the first time since 2006. April Ehlers returns to
the circle for the Norse after recording over 250 strikeouts last
season and recording 19 victories.
Delta State has been picked to finish third in the Gulf South
Conference West Division after a 27-24 season a year ago. Three
Lady Statesmen were named to the Gulf South All-Conference team
after the 2009 squad finished 15-15 in league action. Delta State
returns nine players from a year ago as the program will open their
season on Wednesday afternoon against Louisiana State University
Alexandria.
