No. 3 Saints Cruise Past Young Harris on Senior Day
DAHLONEGA, GA – The 3rd-ranked North Georgia softball celebrated senior day on Sunday afternoon, welcoming Young Harris College to town and sweeping away the Mountain Lions 5-1 in the opener and 9-0 in the nightcap at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium in non-conference action.
The Saints improve to 41-9 on the year in their final non-conference games of the regular season, while the Mountain Lions fall to 17-25 overall.
Pitching dominated the opener, as Jessica Coan was nearly unhittable, striking out 14 batters in the first five innings as the junior stifled Young Harris.
The Saints' offense finally came to life in the fourth inning, stringing together four hits to plate four runs and break the scoreless deadlock. Pilar Harden drove in the first run of the game with an infield single, and Callie Fernandez and Kayla Martin followed with back-to-back RBI hits to send North Georgia racing out to a 4-0 lead.
After both teams traded single runs, Krysten Connelly came on the seventh inning and shut down Young Harris to secure a 5-1 game-one victory. Coan (21-4) earned the victory, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing two hits and no earned runs, while striking out 15 batters.
Game two had some more good pitching as Sarah Phillips and Connelly combined to no-hit Young Harris and lead the Saints to a 9-0 victory in five innings. Phillips (16-4) did the bulk of the work, lasting 4.2 innings and striking out seven, while Connelly recorded the final out of the game.
The offense did their part in the nightcap, scoring a single run in the first inning, and two more in the second, before coming back with a six spot in the fourth to capture the 9-0 victory.
The six runs in the fourth inning were scored on only three hits, but the Saints capitalized on a trio of Young Harris errors to race out to a 9-0 lead. Sarah Johnson, Katherine Martin, and Callie Fernandez all tallied RBI hits in the inning.
The Saints will take on Francis Marion on Monday afternoon in the final regular season games of the year. First pitch against the Patriots has been moved up an hour and is now set for 3:00 p.m. at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium.
