AUGUSTA, GA – Jessica Coan's impressive opening weekend was rewarded on Tuesday afternoon when she was named the Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week announced from the league office.
The senior was nearly perfect in four appearances last weekend at the Loyal Blue Classic when she picked up three wins and added a save for the unbeaten and 3rd-ranked team in the country.
She got the start in the season opener against Tusculum College and gave up a leadoff single in the first inning before settling in and recording 18 straight outs without allowing a hit. She tallied eight strikeouts in six innings of work in the 7-0 victory over the Pioneers.
Coan came out even hotter in relief later in the day against North Greenville, striking out the first five batters she faced, and using just 20 pitches to do so. In 4.0 innings against the Crusaders she punched out seven and allowed just two hits and no runs to pick up her second win of the day.
On Sunday afternoon the defending PBC Pitcher of the Year was in relief in the opener, tossing 1.1 innings and striking out all four batters to earns the save. She entered the game with two runners on and two outs in the 6th inning and quickly got out of the jam with a three-pitch strikeout to end the Bellarmine threat.
Coan assumed her role as a starter in the weekend finale and shut down Tusculum for the second time in as many days, tossing all 7.0 innings for her third win of the year and first complete game victory.
The Pioneers managed just four hits and one run against Coan, the only run she allowed in over 18 innings on the weekend. She recorded nine more strikeouts and faced just 27 batters on the afternoon.
In 18.1 innings, Coan had 28 strikeouts and walked just four batters. She allowed just seven hits as opponents are hitting .123 against the right-hander in 57 at-bats.
After finishing 5th in the country in strikeouts a year ago, Coan currently leads the Peach Belt Conference in strikeouts per game at 10.69.
Coan and the Saints will put their perfect record on the line Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Mars Hill to take on the Lions in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Ponder Field in Mars Hill, North Carolina.
