DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia softball team was represented well on the 2012 Daktronics Southeast All-Region Team, placing five on the two teams with Melissa Dickie earning Region Pitcher of the Year honors.
For the fourth straight season, the Saints have had the Southeast Region's best pitcher. Dickie earns the honor after receiving Peach Belt Freshman of the Year honors a few weeks ago.
The native of Buford, Georgia, is currently 20-0 on the season with a team-best 1.18 ERA. She has thrown six shutouts and gone the distance 13 times. In her last outing against Columbus State in the NCAA Regionals, she threw a complete game two-hitter against the Cougars potent offense.
North Georgia placed a total of five players on the two teams, with three appearing on the First-Team and two on the Second-Team.
Coan is making her second straight appearance on the All-Region First-Team. She was named Southeast Region Pitcher of the Year last year, along with National Pitcher of the Year honors.
The senior from Duluth, Georgia, was dominant again this season. She currently has a record of 25-7 with a 1.43 ERA, including a Southeast Region-high 328 strikeouts. Coan was instrumental to the Regional win this past weekend, when she went 2-0 throwing two complete game shutouts.
Harden makes the move to the First-Team this year after earning Second-Team recognition a year ago. The senior native of Watkinsville, Georgia, is batting .318 with a team-high 35 RBI's and 56 hits. She also earned PBC First-Team All-Conference honors this season as well.
She has been the spark plug for the Saints this season, moving to the lead-off position. Harden still has not committed an error this season in her 40 chances; she has also played and started in every game.
The senior catcher Cox was named to the All-Region team a year ago and also earned First-Team All-Conference honors this season.
The native of Douglasville, Georgia, is hitting .308 this season with 33 RBI's. She is the Saints captain behind the plate, catching for two of the best pitchers in the Southeast. Cox was also honored on Saturday when she received her diploma at home plate prior to North Georgia's game against Columbus State, as she was unable to attend graduation ceremonies.
Gillam was named Second-Team All-Region as the current leading hitter for the No. 11-ranked Saints. She is hitting .331 with a .576 slugging percentage, including 27 RBI's and seven home runs.
From Acworth, Georgia, Gillam has been a huge spark for head coach Mike Davenport this season. She moved into the clean-up spot late in the season and has not looked back. She was also named PBC First-Team All-Conference this season as well.
North Georgia led the first team selections and overall choices with five total players. Four other region teams placed three players on the two teams.
The first team selections will move on to the All-American ballot. The Daktronics All-America programs honor student-athletes in Division II athletic programs. The voting nomination and calculations are all conducted by the school's sports information directors.
