Softball Remains Sixth in Weekly NFCA National Poll

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of North Georgia softball team held station at No. 6 in the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll which was released Wednesday.

The Saints (30-7, 10-2 PBC) lost to Georgia College in the opener of the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with the Bobcats 5-4, but then reeled off five straight wins starting with a 4-0 victory over the Bobcats. They proceeded to sweep Francis Marion University and the University North Carolina Pembroke to end their Spring Break road trip.

Sophomore Kim McMillan and freshman Courtney Poole led the team last week and earned weekly recognition from the PBC office. Poole, who went 3-0 with just three runs allowed, was named the conference's Pitcher of the Week. McMillan was named the PBC Player of the Week for the second week in a row after batting .533 with an .800 slugging percentage through the Francis Marion doubleheader.

West Texas A&M University (24-2) held on to the top spot for a third week in a row, this time by a unanimous vote. The Buffs received all 16 first-place votes while Indianapolis (24-2), Valdosta State (23-6), Armstrong Atlantic (22-3-1) and Southeastern Oklahoma State (27-6) rounded out the rest of the top-five.

Fellow PBC institution Columbus State University (25-11, 6-2 PBC) moved up to 19th in the current poll after checking in at 20th last week.

North Georgia will play host to No. 4 Armstrong Atlantic in a PBC twinbill this Friday, Mar. 29. First pitch of the first game is slated for 5:00 p.m. with the second game to follow at around 7:00 p.m.

The NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, two representing each of the eight NCAA regions. The entire NFCA Top-25 Poll can be found HERE.
