UNG Softball Honors Veterans By Marching In Dahlonega Parade
DAHLONEGA, Georgia – (UNGAthletics.com) – The University of North Georgia softball team honored the school's military heritage by marching in the Dahlonega Veterans' Day parade on Saturday in downtown Dahlonega.
Coaches and players from this year's squad marched as a group and issued American flags to young parade watchers.
UNG is one of only six senior military colleges in the country and has been designated as The Military College of Georgia by the state legislature. UNG also has consistently been recognized as "military friendly" by national publications such as Military Times magazine, GI Jobs magazine and Military Advanced Education magazine.
"North Georgia softball is proud to honor our veterans and words can not express how thankful we are for their service," said UNG head softball coach Mike Davenport. "Their willingness to sacrifice for a greater cause is something that we can all learn from."
Additionally, UNG has been recognized by Military Times magazine in its "2014 Best for Vets" ranking, listed as 21st out of more than 600 schools surveyed across the country. At North Georgia the military is an important part of the university culture; hundreds of alumni, students, faculty, and staff have served in the armed services throughout the university's history or are on active duty today.
