Lady Saints Use "Buzzer Beater" to Down UNCP
DAHLONEGA, GA – North Georgia College
& State University snapped a seven-game losing streak Saturday
afternoon, using a buzzer-beater from Syretha Marble to give the
Lady Saints a 53-52 victory over UNC Pembroke in Peach Belt
Conference action.
North Georgia improves to 6-17 overall and 3-13 in the Peach Belt
Conference, while UNC Pembroke falls to 10-13 overall and 6-10 in
the league.
With just 12 seconds left on the clock, the Braves brought the ball
up the floor and JaToya Kemp took control, picking up a loose ball
and scoring with six ticks left to give UNC Pmebroke a 52-51
advantage.
On the ensuing possession, Marble came the length of the floor
before the ball was stripped out of bounds with 0.5 remaining on
the clock. Off the inbounds pass, Marble caught the ball, turned,
and knocked down the game-winner as time expired to give the Lady
Saints a 53-52 comeback victory.
With the bucket, Marble finished with 18 points and eight rebounds,
while Alyssa Stokes led all scorers with 19 points on 5-11 shooting
in 36 minutes of action.
Kemp paced the Braves with 13 points and eight rebounds, while
Briana Stanton was the only other UNCP player to reach double
figures with 10 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor.
UNC Pembroke was 41.5 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from
long distance, while North Georgia shot 33.3 percent from the field
and behind the arc.
The Lady Saints will have Sunday off before returning to action
Monday evening at 5:30 p.m., hosting the hurricanes of Georgia
Southwestern for the 2009 Pink Zone game for breast cancer
awareness, part of the WBCA’s national Pink Zone campaign.
