Hurricanes Weather Lady Saints, End Playoff Hopes
AMERICUS, GA
– Georgia Southwestern stayed on pace for the final playoff
spot in the Peach Belt Conference West Division on Saturday
afternoon, taking down North Georgia 74-63 at the Storm Dome in
league action.
The loss for the Lady Saints is their third straight as they fall
to 9-14 overall on the season and 4-10 in the Peach Belt
Conference. North Georgia has also been eliminated from the playoff
race, falling three games back in the win column of the final
postseason spot with just three games to play, while not holding a
tiebreaker against Georgia Southwestern or Montevallo. The
Hurricanes improve to 12-13 on the year with the victory and 7-8 in
league action.
North Georgia led much of the first half, holding a five-point lead
with 5:39 remaining in the period as Whitney Randolph sank four
straight free throws to give the Lady Saints a 26-21 lead, their
largest advantage of the game.
The Lady Saints held the Hurricanes scoreless the final two minute
of the first half and used a three-pointer from Meredith Montgomery
to hold a three-point halftime lead at 33-30.
In the second half, North Georgia held on to a lead until the 14:28
mark when Kanita Holloway hit a layup to give GSW the lead for
good. The Hurricanes led by as many as 13 with 1:53 remaining
before holding on for the 11-point victory.
Whitney Randolph tallied another double-double for the Lady Saints,
scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds, while Janyce Ealey
added a team-high 13 points, and Kari McCann scored 12 points,
including a perfect 7-7 stint from the charity stripe.
Four Hurricanes finished in double figures, led by Whitley Wiltz
who scored a game-high 19 points on 11-15 shooting from the free
throw line, while also recording a double-double with 20
rebounds.
North Georgia returns to action on Monday afternoon, traveling to
UNC Pembroke to take on the Braves. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. in
the English E. Jones Health and Physical Education Center.
