Women's Basketball Picked to Finish 8th in Peach Belt
AUGUSTA, GA – The North Georgia women's basketball team has been picked to finish eighth in the Peach Belt Conference according to a poll of the league's head coaches released on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lander Bearcats, defending PBC Champions, are the unanimous choice to repeat that achievement as the Bearcats received all 12 first-place votes they were eligible for to lead the coaches' poll with 144 points.
Clayton State received 11 second-place votes and finished with 133. Francis Marion is third in the poll with Georgia College, USC Aiken and Columbus State behind them. UNC Pembroke, North Georgia, Georgia Southwestern, Montevallo, Armstrong Atlantic State and a tie with Flagler and Augusta State round out the voting. Coaches were not permitted to rank their own teams.
With the league broken down into East and West Divisions for the second consecutive year, the Lady Saints find themselves ranked 4th in the West behind Clayton State, Georgia College, and Columbus State. North Georgia was picked to finish as high as 4th by two coaches, and low as 11th with one vote, while a trio of 7th place votes was the most in one single slot.
The Lady Saints return a pair of starters of last season, including the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year as North Georgia looks to make their way up the standings and advance to their first-ever NCAA National Tournament.
Buffie Burson returns for her 17th season as the head coach, bringing with her over 300 wins and a .679 winning percentage. The 2010-11 squad will look to transfer Lindsey Moss to step in and provide scoring and leadership, while guards Meredith Montgomery and Janyce Ealey will once again serve as vital pieces to the offense.
The 2010-11 North Georgia women's basketball season begins on Nov. 12, while Peach Belt Conference play tips off on January 3, at Augusta State and continues through to the 2011 PBC Tournament in March with the semifinals and finals being hosted once again by USC Aiken.
