Women’s Basketball Picks up 86-72 Exhibition Win Over LaGrange
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Jaymee Carnes picked up right where she left off Friday night as she led the North Georgia College & State University women's basketball team to an 86-72 win in an exhibition game against LaGrange College Friday night at Memorial Hall Gymnasium.
In the Saints' final tune-up prior to starting the regular season next week, Carnes led all scorers with 22 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. The junior from nearby Gainesville, Ga. went 8-14 from the field and 6-9 from the charity stripe.
North Georgia ended the contest shooting 50.8% (31-61) from the field and had just four three-pointers as a team.
Four players had double-digit points for LaGrange led by Katie Covington's 18 off the bench. She went 10-11 from the charity stripe and was just 4-11 from the field.
Caroline Brashier chipped in 15 points, Madison McDonald added 13 and Heather Miller had 11 points. Miller was the only starter for the Panthers to break into double digits.
The Saints started the game off extremely well as they raced out to an 11-0 lead through the first 16 minutes before Brashier finally broke through with a three-pointer for LaGrange.
With just 8:13 left in the first half, the Panthers took their first lead of the game off a jumper by Covington, but North Georgia fought back to take a 42-38 lead into the locker room at half time.
A pair of Huffman free throws with just under 17 minutes remaining in the game gave the Saints the lead for good and North Georgia went on from there to extend its lead over the closing minutes.
The Saints will open their regular season with their own Lady Saints Tip-Off Classic next weekend, Friday, Nov. 16 through Saturday, Nov. 17. North Georgia's first game will be against Carson-Newman college at 6 p.m. on Friday.
