Women's Basketball Breezes Past Brevard 68-42 For Season-Opening Victory
BREVARD, North Carolina – (UNGAthletics.com) – Jaymee Carnes registered a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs, as she led three Nighthawks in double-figures in the University of North Georgia's 68-42 season-opening victory at Brevard College. Stephanie Huffman and Cierra Jackson added 17 and 11 respectively as the team breezed to the 26-point non-conference road win.
After North Georgia eased out to an early 4-3 lead, the Nighthawks would post a quick 14-0 run over the next 3:30 capped by five consecutive points form Huffman to extend their lead to double figures. After a basket by BC's Taylor Hiatt, the Nighthawks would hit five of their next six shots to extend the lead to 23 (31-8). UNG would hold a double-figure lead for the remainder of the contest and would lead by as many as 25 before intermission.
Brevard (0-1) was led in scoring by Madison Lenox with 13 points as she was the only Tornado to reach double figures. Reigning South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year Tuccoa Bracket was held to seven points on just three made field goals in 16 attempts.
Huffman added eight rebounds and was 7-10 from the floor while Jackson pulled down seven rebounds and connected on 5 of her eight field goal attempts.
The UNG defense forced Brevard into more turnovers (19) than made field goals (14-57, 25%).
UNG returns to action on Friday, November 15 when the team hosts Northwood (Fla.) University in the home opener set for 6:00 PM in Memorial Hall.
