UNG Women's Golf Opens 2013-14 Season At JSU Chris Banister Classic

GLENCOE, Ala. – (UNGAthletics.com) – The University of North Georgia women's golf team officially kicked off the 2013-14 season by opening up the Chris Banister Classic hosted by Jacksonville State University at the Sliver Lakes Golf Course.  The Nighthawks are the only non-NCAA Division I program in the six-team field and carded an opening-round 345 in the 54-hole event.

Players were interrupted by a thunderstorm that swept through Alabama's Calhoun County.  The delay lasted over two hours and players returned to the course at 2:30 CST.

Host Jacksonville State holds a commanding lead over second place Arkansas at Little Rock (+24).  Belmont and Austin Peay stand third and fourth respectively.

Sophomore Anna Higgins led UNG with an opening-round 78 including an even-par 36 front side and currently stands in a tie for sixth place out of 37 golfers.  JSU's Melania Bajo Geijo lead the field after carding an opening round two-under-par 70.

Casey Truelove's 81 was good for a tie for 19th and was the second best opening round for the Nighthawks.  Abbey Gil (91), LeeAnn Noble (95) and Bridget Sandy (95) rounded out the team scoring for North Georgia.

UNG stands in sixth place out of six teams after the opening day of the 36-hole event and trails fifth-place Lipscomb University by 19 strokes.

Monday's second of three rounds will get underway at 9:10 AM.
