Lady Saints Explode, Down Lander 6-1
Greenwood, SC - Kelly Martin and Lauren Schenk
scored two goals apiece as North Georgia College & State
University erupted for four first-half goals en route to a 6-1
Peach Belt Conference women's soccer victory at Lander University
Saturday afternoon.
North Georgia improved to 4-3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Peach Belt.
The Lady Bearcats fell to 5-2, 1-1.
The Saints opened the scoring in the 36th minute after Lander
goalkeeper Rachael Hine made a point-blank save against Emily
Hughes. With the ball still in play, Martin scored on a shot from
the edge of the box off an assist from Laura Lane. Shortly after
that, Hine left the game due to injury and was replaced in goal by
Katherine Baltz.
Martin scored her second goal of the match in the 26th minute off
Casey Smith's well-executed corner kick. Schenk scored three
minutes later on a header off Danielle Brannan's assist.
With 13:39 left in the first half, Katie Turner blasted a shot from
well beyond the box to make it 4-0 going into halftime.
Hine returned to the game early in the second half, but in the
field, not in goal. The Lady Bearcats finally got on the board
during the 58th minute when Christin Moss nailed a penalty kick
past Saints goalkeeper Jessica English.
But Smith restored North Georgia's four-goal lead back when she
found the back of the net off an assist from Schenk with 25:07
left.
Hine took a shot on goal for Lander when she got behind the wall
off a direct kick from Moss, but English made the save.
The Saints scored their final goal with 2:23 left when Schenk found
the back of the net off a pass by Erin Cummings.
North Georgia out-shot the Lady Bearcats 23-11. English had eight
saves for the Saints. Baltz had six saves for Lander while Hine had
two stops.
The Lady Saints return to action Saturday, October 4, hosting USC
Aiken at the Soccer Complex with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
