Casey Smith Tabbed as PBC Defender of the Week
AUGUSTA, GA – Senior All-American Casey Smith has been
named the Peach Belt Conference Defender of the Week announced
Tuesday afternoon from the league office.
Smith picks up her first weekly award of the year from the league
office, and has now been awarded seven weekly honors in her career.
She picked up an offensive and defensive honor during her sophomore
campaign, before tallying four defensive awards last season,
including back-to-back weeks on two different occasions.
She started the week with a goal and an assist in a 4-2 victory
over Newberry College, scoring the game-winner in the 56th minute
with a free kick straight into net for her first goal of the year.
She then assisted in Samantha
Abrahart's goal in the 65th minute, sending another perfect
cross into the box for the freshman's fifth goal of the year.
The Stockbridge, Georgia, native then put together a hat trick
full of assists in a 4-0 shutout over the University of Montevallo
on Saturday evening, assisting in the final three goals of the game
to give Smith eight assists on the year and 34 for her career. Her
career assists mark leaves her just one short of tying the Peach
Belt Conference's all-time mark, a record currently held by
Armstrong Atlantic's Kristin Burton.
Smith has recorded all eight of her assists in the last four games
where North Georgia has scored 17 goals and put together a
four-game winning streak. She leads the league in assists, and sits
seventh in the conference in points with 10. North Georgia leads
the league in corner kicks, attempting 51 corners with Smith
picking up five of her eight assists from the those corners.
