Women’s Soccer Leaving at 1 PM in Preparation to Take on No. 1 Armstrong in Semifinal Bout
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The North Georgia College & State University women's soccer team will be leaving today, Thursday, Nov. 1, for Evans, Ga. where they will be competing in the semifinal round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament for the third time in as many years. Their opponent on Friday at 5 p.m. will be national No. 1 and top-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State University.
The Saints will be leaving campus at 1:00 p.m. from in front of Memorial Hall Gymnasium and anybody wishing to send the women off is welcome to come to wish them well.
This will be the sixth meeting between the two programs in three years. North Georgia (14-3-2), the No. 5 team in the Southeast Region, is 1-2-2 in that span against the Pirates (16-1-1) who hold the top spot in the most recent region rankings.
Armstrong is coming off a narrow 1-0 victory over the University of Montevallo in Savannah Tuesday afternoon while the Saints defeated the fifth-seeded Lakers of Clayton State University Tuesday to advance into the semifinal round. The Saints are the No. 4 seed in the PBC Tournament.
Earlier in the season, the Saints pushed the Pirates to the brink, but fell 4-3 in overtime on the road in Savannah. North Georgia was one of just three teams to take Armstrong to overtime this season.
In 2010, the Saints defeated Armstrong 3-1 in the semifinal round of the PBC Tournament to advance on to the finals, avenging a 2-1 loss in the regular season.
The Saints are still looking to advance to the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row. While Tuesday's win Tuesday coupled with Lander University falling at home to the University of North Caroline Pembroke helped, a win Friday evening would add insurance for the Saints.
North Georgia was fifth in the most recent NCAA Southeast Region rankings that came out Wednesday evening. Only the top-six in each region advance to the NCAA tournament and three of the six spots are automatic berths awarded to the winner of the conference tournaments for the Peach Belt, South Atlantic and Conference Carolinas.
Live stats of the match will be available. The link can be found on the main website (www.SaintsSports.com) in the schedule on the right as well as on the women's soccer schedule page.
