Lee and Croom Named to Capital One Academic All-District 3 Women’s Soccer Team
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – As the North Georgia College & State University women's soccer team travels to Evans, Ga. for their semifinal match against No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic State University, two of the players will do so having been recognized for their hard work in the classroom. Senior defender Taylor Lee and junior forward Kayla Croom have been selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 3 Women's Soccer Team as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The 13-member team was released Thursday afternoon. To be nominated for the award, student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.30 grade point average and been either a starter or significant contributor.
The Peach Belt Conference is well represented on the team with 10 selections coming from within the conference. Armstrong Atlantic State University claimed the most spots with four while Columbus State University and North Georgia both had two players make the team. The University of North Carolina Pembroke and Young Harris both had one selection.
Lee, a senior from McDonough, Ga., has been the anchor for the Saints' defense that has produced nine shutouts on the season and held North Georgia's opponents to just 25 goals compared to the Saints 69. She has started all 19 games this season, rarely leaving the pitch, and heading into Friday's semifinal match, Lee has recorded 10 assists which is good enough for second in the league.
Lee boasts a 3.85 GPA as a special Education Major.
Croom, a native of Alpharetta, Ga., has seen action for the Saints in all 19 games this season and is typically the first player off the bench. She is currently tied for second on the team and seventh in the league with nine goals, including two game-winners, and has 19 points for the season when added to her one assist.
Croom holds a 3.55 GPA as a Biology/Pre-Dental Major.
Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All‐America teams programs since 2011.
The Academic All‐District teams include the student‐athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the second year of the expanded Academic All‐America program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar‐athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two‐year schools.
The Capital One Division II and III Academic All‐America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012‐13 DII and DIII Academic All‐America teams program.
First‐team Academic All‐District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All‐America Team ballot, where first‐, second‐ and third‐team All‐America honorees will be selected later this month.
