Women’s Soccer Places Three on NSCAA All-Region Teams, Awarded National Academic Honor
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – For the second straight year the North Georgia College & State University women's soccer team has placed a trio of players on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire All-Southeast Region team announced Tuesday. The 2011-12 team was also recognized for their efforts away from the soccer pitch with the NSCAA's College Team Academic Award.
Redshirt junior Kelly Penston was named to the first team after earning second team honors last year while senior Taylor Lee and sophomore Cicely Taliaferro were both third team selections. The trio was also named to the Daktronics All-Southeast Region team released last month with Taliaferro making the first team and Penston and Lee earning second team plaudits.
The PBC placed 22 total student-athletes on the three teams including nine on the first team, seven on the second and six on the third.
The 2011-12 Saints team was also recognized by the NSCAA with the 2011-12 College Team Academic Award as the squad boasted a 3.30 grade point average. The Saints were one of four Peach Belt Conference women's soccer teams to earn the honor joining Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University and Georgia College.
A native of Suwanne, Ga., Penston is a three-time All-PBC selection, including being named to the first team in 2012. She was also named to the PBC's Preseason All-Conference team prior to this season.
In her four years with the program, Penston has ascended to second all-time in school history with 58 points and 24 goals. She is just 12 points shy of first place and needs just six goals to tie first place in that category. Her 12 goals this season is also tied for second all-time while her 28 points is the third-best point total in a single season.
Lee, a defender from McDonough, Ga., is a two-time Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament selection who led the team this season with 10 assists – good enough for second-most assists recorded in a single season in school history. It is the second season in a row that she has led the team in the category and her 17 career assists leaves her second all-time in school history for the category.
Last month, Lee picked up several academic awards as she was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Second Team after earning All-District 3 First Team honors. She is also a two-time PBC All-Academic selection.
Taliaferro, a midfielder from Marietta, Ga., started all 22 games for the Saints this season. She finished the year tied for third on the team with nine goals that, when coupled with four assists, gave her 22 points which was good enough for fourth on the team.
An All-PBC Second Team selection this season, Taliaferro scored the game-winner in the Saints' season finale against USC Aiken. For the season, she took 41 shots with 27 being on goal.
