#13 Patriots Hold off Lady Saints for 7-2 PBC Victory
DAHLONEGA, GA – The North Georgia women's tennis team was a few points away from shocking 13th-ranked Francis Marion University on Sunday afternoon, but the Patriots held on a pair of key matches to come away with a 7-2 victory in Peach Belt Conference action.
North Georgia drops to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Peach Belt Conference with the defeat, while the 13th-ranked Patriots remain unbeaten, improving to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in league action.
The Lady Saints struggled in doubles play as the duo of Jitka Gavdunova and Mona Blauen, ranked 5th in the country, jumped out a 6-0 lead over Stasa Vujosevic and Laura Chapman before holding on for the 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. The Patriots would take No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with 8-5 victories to jump out to a commanding 3-0 lead heading to singles play.
North Georgia appeared to be heading in the right direction during the opening games of singles action as Laura Chapman outdueled 35th-ranked Gavdunova 7-5 in the first set at No. 1 singles, while Stasa Vujosevic also came out on top in the opening set at No. 2 singles, holding the advantage over 31st-ranked Blauen.
Chapman and Vujosevic would both drop three-set heart breakers to give Francis Marion the first two points in singles play and the clinching 5-0 lead, but the Lady Saints continued to battle as Juliana Chang pulled out a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, and Jordan Poole dominated Kerry Hall 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to give North Georgia their second point of the day.
Francis Marion picked up wins in the final two matches of the day as the Patriots held on for the 7-2 Peach Belt Conference victory.
The Lady Saints will look to rebound and get back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon, welcoming Newberry College to town for a non-conference showdown with the Wolves. First serve at the Yahoola Creek Tennis Facility is set for 2:00 p.m.
