Men Finish 5th Against Strong Field at JSU Opener


OXFORD, AL – The North Georgia men’s cross country team opened their 2009 season Saturday morning at the Jacksonville State University Strut’s Season Opener, finishing fifth at the City of Oxford Parks and Recreation.

NCAA Division I member Kennesaw State University took home the victory, tallying just 23 points to win the event, while West Georgia came in second with 65 points, Clayton Sate third with 73, Jacksonville State University fourth with 83, and North Georgia rounded out the field with 130 total points.

The five teams competed on the 3.1 mile course, the Saints’ only 5000 meter event of the 2009 season.

Tyler Mattix picked up right where he left off in 2008, leading the team in 27th position with a time of 16:03, while Charles Buesse crossed the line just five places later in 32nd position, finishing the course in 16:36.

Charlie McKinney jumped up to the third position on the team, as the Canton, Ga., native finished 37th overall with a time of 16:50.

Teale Marchette and Nicholas Bava rounded out the top five on the squad in the fourth and fifth positions respectively, finishing the course in 16:47 (35th) and 17:00 (39th).

Andrew Garritson finished in 42nd, Cody Carlson placed 46th, Zachary Loggins 51st, and Christopher Lee 52nd.

The Saints will go right back to work next weekend, traveling to the Berry College Invitational on Saturday, September 12, with the gun set to go off at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.
