Men's Cross Country Take 13th at Regional Champs
WINGATE, NC - The
North Georgia College & State University men’s cross
country ended their season Saturday morning, taking 13th place in
the field of 23 teams at the 2009 NCAA Division II Southeast
Regional Championships hosted by Wingate University.
Queens University captured their second straight Southeast
Regional Championship, dominating the field for just 28 total
points, while Columbus State was second with 70 points, followed by
Mars Hill, Lees-McRae, and Clayton State rounded out the
field’s top five. North Georgia was 13th overall, posting 363
total points in the event.
In a photo finish, Oscar Ogwaro of Queens outlasted Meshack
Koyiaki of Columbus State, using replays to determine the winner as
both individuals were given times of 31:14 in the championship.
Tyler Mattix was once again the high finisher for the Saints,
taking 44th place overall with a time of 35:07. The sophomore led
North Georgia in every race during the 2009 season, and posted his
fastest collegiate 10,000-meter time in the event.
Teale Marchette rose to the occasion during his final run of the
year, finishing second on the team for the third straight week with
a time of 35:10, crossing the line right on the heels of Mattix to
take 46th place overall.
Charlie McKinney finished third on the team with a time of 36:04,
running the 10,000-meter course in 69th position overall, while
Nicholas Bava was 98th overall, posting a time of 37:29.
Charles Beusse rounded out the top five for the Saints, finishing
the championship course in 38:30, good for 115th place overall in
the field of nearly 160 athletes.
North Georgia ends the season having placed in the top 10 in five
of their seven events, and will look to make a splash next year
with all five of their top runners returning for the 2010 season.
